Aqualis Cleaning, Preparation & Stripping

Aqualis No Fungal Pro, is a universal water-based pre-treatment and preservative suitable for use on properly prepared timber, wood composites, concrete, and stone pavers. No- Fungal inhibits algae, fungal, lichen and mildew regrowth.

Surface Preparation

Raw Timber

  1. Ensure surface is dry, free from dirt, grease, surface biota (mould, algae, lichen etc.)
  2. Treat with Timber Clean solution (refer to label instructions), thoroughly pre-wet the surface and surrounding walls and vegetation with water, scrub into the surface with a soft bristle broom or brush and allow to stand for 3-5 min. Do not allow the surface to dry out.
  3. Neutralise the timber surface by thoroughly washing with Timber Prep solution (refer to label instructions) once again scrub into the surface using a soft bristle broom or brush. Allow to activate for 3-5 min and thoroughly rinse with clean water. Allow timber to surface dry and lightly sand with 80-150 grit paper to remove raised timber fibres or any remaining surface impurities.
  4. Allow good surface drying prior application of NO FUNGAL PRO.
  5. • Water test, the surface of the deck before applying. Sprinkle water on at least three random sections of deck. The water must instantaneously absorb into the timber and not bead on the surface. If water beading occurs or the surface is resistant to water penetration, do not commence coating. Repeat the Timber Prep /rinse treatment and sand again to ensure correct surface properties are achieved.

Wood Plastic Composites

Before treating Composite with No Fungal Pro, clean off all dirt oil mold or algae growth.

Extreme: Removal of severe soiling, light oxidation, fresh BBQ stains and light build-up of tree sap and fungal / algae build-up.

  1. Pre-wet area to be cleaned with fresh water.
  2. Dilute 1part Composite Bright to 4 parts water by volume.
  3. Apply diluted Composite Bright mix by mop or spray and allow soaking in for at least 2-3 min. For stubborn stains allow 5-10 min
  4. Scrub surface with a stiff bristle brush, broom, or mechanical agitator
  5. Thoroughly rinse off with water

Light: General cleaning and up-keep.

  1. Dilute 1part Composite Bright to 10 parts water by volume.
  2. Pre-wet composite surface with water
  3. Apply diluted Composite Bright mix by mop or spray and allow soaking in for at least 2-3 min. For stubborn stains allow 5-10 min
  4. Scrub surface with a stiff bristle brush, broom, or mechanical agitator
  5. Thoroughly rinse off with water

Application

Raw Timber

  1. Apply diluted No Fungal Pro liberally, work well into the timber grain allowing chemical to thoroughly soak in. Usually one coat is adequate, for severely affected areas a second treatment may be necessary.
  2. Allow surface to completely dry out. Ensure treated areas that are still wet are secured from household pets.
  3. Once surface has dried, Application of H₂Oil topcoats can proceed.

Previously Painted / Oiled Timber

  1. No Fungal Pro should only be applied to raw timber.
All other oils or coatings should be thoroughly stripped clean or sanded back to bare timber. Old coatings including solvent-based oil can be removed with Aqualis ‘Strip Ease’ follow recommended guidelines.
  2. Once the old coating has been totally stripped away, pre-wet the surface and all surrounding walls, metal surfaces and vegetation with water thoroughly wash the surface with Aqualis Timber Clean (follow Timber Clean guidelines, then while the timber is still wet immediately neutralise the timber surface by thoroughly washing with Timber Prep solution (follow mixing and application instructions), rinse with clean water and as soon as surface is dry, lightly sand with 80-150 grit paper to remove raised timber fibres or any remaining surface imperfections if required.
  3. Apply Diluted No Fungal Pro liberally, work well into the timber grain allowing chemical to thoroughly soak in. Usually one coat is adequate, for severely affected areas a second treatment may be necessary.
  4. Once surface has dried, Application of H₂Oil topcoats can proceed.

Wood Plastic Composites

  1. Apply diluted No Fungal Pro liberally, work well into the composite allowing chemical to thoroughly soak in. Usually one coat is adequate, for severely affected areas a second treatment may be necessary.
  2. Allow surface to completely dry out. Ensure all ‘wet’ treated areas are secured from household pets.
  3. Seal surface with Aqualis Composite Sealer (refer to Composite sealer guidelines)

Maintenance

Microbial growth is dependent on several factors, generally poor ventilation, persistent moisture, dirt pickup, organic debris from surrounding vegetation, climatic conditions etc. If microbial growth is persistent, the cause may be site or structurally specific and may need to be addressed to eliminate the problem. Factors such as poor soil drainage, inadequate ventilation, structural faults, no moisture barrier, lack of maintenance or a combination of which may all contribute to mould, mildew, algae, or lichen regrowth. Treating the surface may intermittently minimize microbial regrowth on the ‘surface’, however, beneath the surface will continue to be a problem so long as the root cause has not been eliminated.

Coated decking should be periodically checked for signs of weathering or damage which may include fading of colour, greying of surface, dry patches, deep scratches, water ingress or staining. Early signs of surface defects should be repaired immediately.

  1. Wash the surface with Deck Bright and allow to surface dry
  2. For WPC Composites, treat exposed composite with Composite Bright or for Timber, treat grey timber with timber clean/timber prep and allow to dry.
  3. Re-treat all cleaned raw surface with Diluted No Fungal Pro, allow the surface to completely dry
  4. Apply maintenance topcoats as required, for WPC Composites use Aqualis Composite Sealer, and for timber use Aqualis H2Oil.
